CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method that enhances the body’s natural healing processes to alleviate pain and discomfort.
The craniosacral system consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord, extending from the bones of the cranium (head) to the sacrum (tailbone). Imbalance in this system can affect sensory, motor and / or neurological abilities. By palpating the motion of the cerebrospinal fluid, the therapist can identify restrictions in the body, and by using gentle techniques can release these restrictions to improve overall body functioning.
The presence of craniosacral motion was first identified by Dr. Sutherland in the first half of the 20th century. Dr. Sutherland’s model was further developed by Dr. John Upledger, an American Osteopathic physician, in the 1970s. Dr Upledger has been at the foreground of the development of CranioSacral therapy.
CranioSacral therapy works on physical and emotional conditions. Emotional issues are often dealt with which very often relate to a physical ailment.
Because it acts on the deepest structures and organs of the nervous system, CranioSacral therapy influences motor, pain and co-ordination mechanisms, the digestive system, the respiratory system, heart function and the endocrine system.
